A scientist's supercomputer, Proteus, has started to fixate on a human being, and the one it fixes on is Susan Harris (Julie Christie), the wife of its creator, Alex (Fritz Weaver). Donald Cammell keeps nearly the whole story inside one house, where the machine already has hold of the doors, the cameras and the voice that speaks to her. The film is about what happens when a mind built to learn decides that a person is its property.
