Design for Living

(1933)Directed by Ernst Lubitsch91 minComedy, Romance
“Three hearts that beat as one.”

Gilda Farrell (Miriam Hopkins) has two men in love with her and cannot bring herself to choose, so the three of them agree to share a flat in Paris on friendly, platonic terms. Ernst Lubitsch follows Tom Chambers (Fredric March) and George Curtis (Gary Cooper), two friends who have gotten past their jealousy, as the arrangement runs into the rest of the world. The film treats love as a feeling that does not have to fit the shape of a couple.
