“The life...the women...the conquests of Napoleon!”

In Marseilles in 1794, Desiree Clary (Jean Simmons) works as a millinery clerk and falls for the young Napoleon Bonaparte (Marlon Brando), a soldier with big plans. Henry Koster follows her through the years that carry him toward an empire, and she ends up married to his aide, General Bernadotte (Michael Rennie). Josephine (Merle Oberon) becomes Napoleon's wife, but Desiree remains the one he keeps coming back to.
