“You can betray your country but not your heart.”

Alexander Ivanov (Charles Dance) has spent decades in New York wondering what became of Katya (Rebecca Ferguson), the wife he left behind in Moscow when he defected in 1961. In 1991, his niece Lauren (Rebecca Ferguson) travels to Moscow for a painting exhibition. Shamim Sarif cuts between the two eras, and what binds Alexander and Katya is a marriage neither Cold War border could end.
