Destination Tokyo

(1943)Directed by Delmer Daves135 minWar, Drama
“Explosive ! . . . And As Big As The Broad Pacific !”

It is World War II, and Captain Cassidy (Cary Grant) takes his submarine toward Tokyo Bay on a secret mission, gathering information ahead of the planned bombing of the city. Delmer Daves, in his first film as director, spends the long voyage on the crew, among them Wolf (John Garfield) and 'Cookie' Wainwright (Alan Hale). The men learn each other's habits and histories in cramped quarters, and the film's concern is how ordinary men carry a job like this together.
