“A woman, two men, a love story, a murder, a boxing-match, the mafia...”

Emile Chenal (Claude Brasseur) and his wife, Françoise, are staying at a Paris hotel and trying to collect a large debt from the boxing manager Jim Fox Warner (Johnny Hallyday). Two floors away, Inspector Neveu (Jean-Pierre Léaud) is working a murder from years back, and his case keeps crossing theirs, with the police and the mob both closing in. Godard lets the characters talk past one another, and Emile keeps pressing for his money.
