Lance Poole (Robert Taylor) comes home to Wyoming wearing a Union uniform and a Medal of Honor, and the town treats the man who earned both as an outsider to be removed. He is a Shoshone, and the land his family has held is being eyed by Verne Coolan (Louis Calhern), a lawyer who knows how to make the law work against him. Anthony Mann frames Poole alone against the rock walls above the valley, the medal still on his coat.
