“40 stories of sheer adventure!”

A Los Angeles skyscraper has been seized on Christmas Eve, its party guests held hostage by a team of terrorists led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman). One man slipped away unseen: John McClane (Bruce Willis), a New York cop upstairs to see his estranged wife, Holly (Bonnie Bedelia). John McTiernan keeps the camera inside the building's floors and shafts, so the whole night feels sealed in with him.
