Harriet Frankovitz (Evan Rachel Wood) is a restless girl living at her mother's motel in small-town New Hampshire, certain there is a life somewhere else. When Ricky Schroth (Kevin Bacon), a mentally disabled man, comes to stay, she finds him kinder than anyone she knows. Timothy Hutton, in his first film as a director, stays close to the two of them at the motel, the sister Gwen (Mary Stuart Masterson) and their mother always somewhere in the frame.
