Disappearing Acts

“Real love. Real life.”

Zora Banks (Sanaa Lathan) is a singer trying to make it in a bohemian corner of New York when she meets Franklin Swift (Wesley Snipes), a construction worker with his own bills and his own plans. Gina Prince-Bythewood adapts Terry McMillan's 1989 novel for HBO, following how a first love takes hold between two people still figuring out what they want. Zora keeps singing, and the film stays close to her face.
