A massive object appears in Earth's orbit with no explanation, and Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt), a government analyst, races to understand what it is. She pulls together Daniel Kellner (Josh O'Connor), a physicist, and Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth) to decode the threat in hours. When the object begins to move, Spielberg cuts between their war room and the sky above the city, where the first light of contact breaks through the clouds.
