“Can a Woman Kill a Man With Whom She Has Known a Night of Love?”

The Austrian Secret Service recruits Magda (Marlene Dietrich), a widow with a seductive reputation, and sends her to spy on the Russians under the code name X27. Josef von Sternberg dresses her in Travis Banton's costumes and posts her against Colonel Kranau (Victor McLaglen), a Russian officer she is meant to charm and watch. Magda takes the assignment as a job to be done well, and she goes into it with her eyes open.
