Dr. John Dolittle (Rex Harrison), a veterinarian who talks with animals, sets out to sea in search of a giant sea snail. Richard Fleischer sends him abroad with Matthew Mugg (Anthony Newley) and Emma Fairfax (Samantha Eggar), among a crew that includes Albert Blossom (Richard Attenborough), adapting Hugh Lofting's novels as a musical. If the voyage fails, the animals he cares for lose the one person who understands them.
