Dog Day Afternoon

“Anything can happen during the dog days of summer. On August 22nd, 1972, everything did.”

Nobody inside the Brooklyn bank can work out why Sonny (Al Pacino) wants the money, only that the robbery he and Sal (John Cazale) planned went wrong within minutes. Detective Moretti (Charles Durning) sets up outside while the story of the 1972 holdup spreads to the press. Sidney Lumet shoots it in grainy, sweating handheld close-ups, so the street feels as crowded and hot as the bank.
