In Japan in 1988, a young man called Ichiro Kure (Yoji Matsuda) wakes in an asylum with no memory of who he is or why he is there. Dr. Masaki (Shijaku Katsura) and Dr. Wakabayashi (Hideo Murota) tell him he killed his new bride, Moyoko (Eri Misawa), and that his madness is tied to his birth. Toshio Matsumoto's adaptation of the 1935 novel leaves Ichiro alone with their stories, having nothing of his own to answer them with.
