Dogville

“A quiet little town not far from here.”

Grace Margaret Mulligan (Nicole Kidman) turns up in the tiny Colorado town of Dogville with gangsters after her, and all she wants is somewhere to hide. Tom Edison (Paul Bettany) talks the neighbors into letting her stay if she works for them, and John Hurt narrates as Lars von Trier stages the whole town on a bare soundstage, with chalk lines for walls. The film is about what a community asks in return for its kindness, and what a person owes for being let in.
