Don Giovanni
Mozart's 1787 opera is set down on film in 1979, with Lorin Maazel conducting the Orchestre de l'Opéra national de Paris. Don Giovanni (Ruggero Raimondi) is a nobleman who moves from town to town winning women's hearts, until the trouble he has left behind begins to arrive at his own door, with Donna Elvira (Kiri Te Kanawa) among those he has wronged. Joseph Losey stages the opera for the camera rather than the theater, and he lets the singing carry every scene.
