Doña Bárbara (María Félix) holds a vast ranch she took by manipulation and bribery, and the men around her work for her or stay out of her way. Fernando de Fuentes follows the people drawn into her reach, among them the lawyer Santos Luzardo (Julián Soler) and the young Marisela (María Elena Marqués). Behind the cattle and the borrowed land sits a quiet argument about whether hardness can ever be undone.
