The story begins in Japan, where Suneo has a fossil of a dinosaur claw and will not let Nobita so much as look at it. Stung, Nobita takes up a challenge to find a real dinosaur himself, with Doraemon (Nobuyo Oyama) and the others behind him. Hiroshi Fukutomi sends them digging into a hillside, and what they pull from the dirt is an egg, still whole and waiting to hatch.
