Double Suicide
Jihei (Kichiemon Nakamura II), a paper-mill owner in 18th-century Japan with a wife and children, meets the courtesan Koharu (Shima Iwashita) and cannot stop returning to her. She loves him back, turning away other customers while he schemes to buy her freedom. Masahiro Shinoda adapts Chikamatsu's 1721 bunraku play, and every ruble Jihei spends on her is one his business and his household cannot spare.
