“When someone you love dies... are they gone forever?”

Patients who have come close to dying keep describing the same thing to Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner), an emergency room doctor still grieving his wife Emily (Susanna Thompson): a message from her, passed along from the other side. Tom Shadyac follows Joe as he tries to work out what she wants him to hear and where it is leading him. Joe is a man who has stopped sleeping and stopped trusting what he sees, and he cannot let it go.
