“Secret thoughts... That led to secret love... That led to rapture and terror!”

Miranda Wells (Gene Tierney) leaves her family's Connecticut farm for the Hudson Valley, hired as governess to the young daughter of Nicholas Van Ryn (Vincent Price), a distant relative and an aristocratic patroon. Joseph L. Mankiewicz sets her inside Dragonwyck, his vast mansion. The film is about how appealing a life of ease can look to someone who has never had it, and what that ease asks of her in return.
