Ben Crane (Kurt Russell) is a horse trainer who has little patience left for the racing business that employs him. When a badly injured mare is marked to be put down, he takes her in, and his daughter Cale (Dakota Fanning) is right there beside him. John Gatins, making his directing debut, gives Ben a second chance he hadn't gone looking for, and Ben has to decide how much he'll risk on it.
