It is 1941, and private detective Michael Shayne (Lloyd Nolan) is about to get married when gunshots sound somewhere close by and the ceremony is put off. Eugene Forde sends him into a case with no plan beyond the shots, working beside Inspector Pierson (William Demarest) and crossing paths with Joanne La Marre (Mary Beth Hughes) and Connie Earle (Sheila Ryan). Shayne is a man who cannot leave a question alone, and this one has already cost him his wedding day.
