In 1980 New York, Kate Miller (Angie Dickinson), a housewife, spends her days restless and unsatisfied, and talks it over with her psychiatrist, Doctor Robert Elliott (Michael Caine). Brian De Palma follows her through one day in the city until she is murdered, and the only witness is Liz Blake (Nancy Allen), a prostitute. The police suspect Liz herself, so she teams up with Kate's son Peter (Keith Gordon) to find the killer first.
