Duck Soup

(1933)Directed by Leo McCarey68 minComedy, War
“War is swell...when the Marx Brothers are in it. They'll be out of the trenches by Christmas...if the food doesn't improve!”

Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho Marx) is handed the presidency of bankrupt Freedonia because wealthy Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Dumont) insists on it. Within days he has insulted the neighboring country of Sylvania and declared war, with Chicolini (Chico Marx) and Pinky (Harpo Marx) enlisted in the cause. Leo McCarey keeps the Marx Brothers moving at full speed, and Dumont stands through it all in her formal gown, face composed and unmoved.
