“They were looking for the American Dream. . . They found the American Nightmare.”

Grant (Jon Cryer) and Biscuit (Daniel Roebuck), two punks from New York, are crossing the country in a Volkswagen bug when a gang of rednecks kills their friend. Penelope Spheeris sends them after the killer, Missoula (Lee Ving), through the open country of Arizona and Montana, with Jessie (Catherine Mary Stewart), who runs a wrecking service, along to help. Grant arrives in the desert in the wrong clothes, a city kid with a grudge and no idea how to ride.
