Joe Bell (John Garfield) comes out of prison bitter over a burglary he never committed, and he is soon locked up again, this time on a work farm. There he falls for Mabel Alden (Priscilla Lane), the foreman's daughter, and an argument with her father ends in the older man's death from a weak heart. Lewis Seiler follows the two as they run, with Joe sure no one will believe a nobody like him.
