Why would a boy on his way home for Thanksgiving break treat his mother's boyfriend like a stranger he'd rather lose? Dutch Dooley (Ed O'Neill), a blunt working man, offers to collect Doyle Standish (Ethan Embry) from his prep school so he can meet the kid his girlfriend Natalie (JoBeth Williams) keeps talking about. Peter Faiman sends them across the country, and the film keeps asking what it takes to earn a place with someone who has decided you don't belong.
