“Some species are better off dead.”

Two legends still hang over the Tasmanian bush: the thylacine, declared extinct, and Alexander Pearce, the Pieman, hanged for cannibalism in 1824. Four hikers go deep into remote country to look for the animal, among them Nina (Mirrah Foulkes), who is trying to trace her sister's disappearance, and Jack (Nathan Phillips). Jody Dwyer sends them out to chase one legend, though Jack never thinks to ask which of the two he is walking toward.
