Noriko Mamiya (Setsuko Hara), 28, likes her job and her friends in postwar Tokyo, and she would be happy to leave things as they are. Her family in the Mamiya house, including her brother Koichi (Chishū Ryū), keeps raising the question of marriage, and a 40-year-old business associate named Takako is put forward. Ozu watches the household talk it over, and Noriko sits with the pressure while her childhood friend Kenkichi, now widowed, comes back to the neighborhood.
