Lenny Sethna (Maia Sethna), a young girl in Lahore in 1947, wants nothing more than to stay close to her ayah, Shanta (Nandita Das), and the friends who gather around her. Two of them, Dil Navaz (Aamir Khan) and Hassan (Rahul Khanna), both love Shanta, while the border between India and Pakistan is drawn and the violence spreads closer. Deepa Mehta adapts Bapsi Sidhwa's novel, keeping the camera at a child's height as the adults around her begin to change.
