“Sometimes you can't tell who's good and who's bad! ...”

Cal Trask (James Dean) wants one thing in the Salinas Valley, around the time of the First World War: for his stern father, Adam (Raymond Massey), to love him as much as he loves his good brother, Aron (Richard Davalos). Everything Cal tries goes wrong, including the question of his mother, Kate (Jo Van Fleet), who is not as dead as he was told. Elia Kazan shoots Cal in tilted frames, so the boy always looks slightly off balance next to everyone else.
