In 1949 New York, Jessie Bourne (Barbara Stanwyck) lives on the wealthy side of town and believes her marriage to Brandon (James Mason) is a happy one. Then Isabel Lorrison (Ava Gardner), the woman Brandon once loved, comes back into his life, and he lets himself be drawn toward her. Mervyn LeRoy keeps the story among the rich and the comfortable, where a marriage can look whole long after one person has stopped being honest.
