James Brooke (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is a British adventurer who lands in Sarawak, on the northeast coast of Borneo, in 1839. Almost by chance, the Sultan of Brunei makes him rajah, and he sets out to stamp out piracy, slavery and headhunting while keeping the British Empire's own ambitions at bay. Michael Haussman puts Brooke across from Madame Lim (Josie Ho), and what grows between them has to find room beside the work of ruling.
