Hokusai (Ken Ogata), already a famous woodblock artist, is a widower who needs steady money and has moved in with his daughter Oei (Yuko Tanaka) at the house of his friend Bakin (Toshiyuki Nishida). Kaneto Shindō adapts Seiichi Yashiro's stage play about the painter's later years. Hokusai has a name and a daughter to look after, and he needs the next commission to pay for both.
