“A superlative film”

Edvard Munch (Geir Westby) grows up in Norway with death in the house, first his sister and then his mother, and he nearly dies of illness himself. At university he finds he can paint and falls in with the circle around the nihilist Hans Jæger. Peter Watkins narrates the 1890s in the voice of a documentary, using non-professional actors and handheld cameras, as if a news crew had wandered into the past.
