Effi Briest

At seventeen, Effi Briest (Hanna Schygulla) wants company, someone to talk to, and instead marries the much older Baron Geert von Instetten (Wolfgang Schenck) and follows him to a small, isolated Baltic town. Her new house frightens her, and she is starved for friendship until Major Crampas (Ulli Lommel), a charismatic womanizer, starts calling. Rainer Werner Fassbinder shot it in black and white and kept Fontane's own words for the dialogue and narration.
