In Mexico in 1953, Francisco Galván de Montemayor (Arturo de Córdova) is a wealthy, devout, well-mannered man, and Gloria Milalta (Delia Garcés) meets him and marries him. Luis Buñuel follows the household that forms around them, where his courtesy in company sits next to a harder self he keeps out of sight. The film is about jealousy, and how a husband's suspicion can make a marriage into a room with no door.
