Elena Sokorowska (Ingrid Bergman) is a Polish princess with no money and a gift for making men fall hopelessly in love with her. Then a famous general, Général François Rollan (Jean Marais), takes notice, and the carnivals of the Quatorze Juillet and the military maneuvers of turn-of-the-century France fill up with schemers. Jean Renoir lets Elena move through all of it, and the future of France rests as much on her heart as on his.
