In 1933, Kurt Anderson (Warren William) runs a financially strained New York department store and fires a twenty-year employee as casually as he courts any woman who catches his eye. Roy Del Ruth follows him as he hires Madeline (Loretta Young), a young woman desperate for work, as a salesgirl. She takes the job and falls for Martin West (Wallace Ford), then dreads the day he learns how she got it.
