In the Czech Republic, Josef Tkaloun (Zdeněk Svěrák) has taught literature past the age he could have retired, until the day he realises he no longer understands his pupils. He quits in front of the class, and his wife Eliška (Daniela Kolářová) is left to wonder what a man does with himself afterward. Jan Svěrák, working from a script by his father, keeps the film in small rooms and ordinary talk.
