Brian Taylor (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Peña) are LAPD partners working South Central, and they want to be good cops in a neighborhood where the job corrodes you daily. They unknowingly draw the attention of a gang whose reach extends further than they realize. Ayer films them through dash cams and handheld footage, so when the threat tightens around them, there is nowhere to look away.
