The Comedian (Gregg Turkington) is a worn-out stand-up working his way across the Mojave Desert, playing clubs and rooms where the crowds are hostile or indifferent. Rick Alverson sends him toward Los Angeles, where an estranged daughter is waiting, with Eddie The Mime (Tye Sheridan) and John (John C. Reilly) among those he meets on the road. The film is about a man who keeps asking strangers for a laugh he is not going to get.
