Someone has helped a Rebel officer and his men slip out of a Union fort in the Arizona desert, and Captain Roper (William Holden), the man in charge of keeping them there, wants to know who. Carla Forester (Eleanor Parker) is a Southern belle whose arrival at Fort Bravo sets the whole thing moving. John Sturges films it in sun-bleached country, and Roper is a hard man whose duty is about to cost him his peace of mind.
