“The stage is her world.”

Esther Kahn (Summer Phoenix) is a quiet Jewish girl in 19th century London who feels almost nothing in her own life, yet feels certain the stage is where she belongs. Nathan Quellen (Ian Holm), a friend and teacher, agrees to work with her, and her path takes her toward the theater and the people who live around it. Arnaud Desplechin, a French director making his first film in English, shot it for the Cannes competition in 2000.
