“Do you think one can live only for others?”

Makoto Sawai (Koji Yakusho), a bus driver in rural Japan, comes through a hijacking that leaves most of his passengers dead, and the survivors scatter, none of them able to go on as before. Shinji Aoyama follows them to the small town where a serial killer is on the loose. Years later, Makoto reunites with two of the children from that bus, Kozue (Aoi Miyazaki) and her brother Naoki (Masaru Miyazaki), and the three begin to lean on one another.
