“World War II had finished, but it left indelible marks.”
Leopold Kessler (Jean-Marc Barr) is an American of German descent who arrives in Germany in 1945 and takes a job as a sleeping car conductor on the Zentropa line, arranged by his uncle. He wants to stay neutral and help a country that is hurting, while the Allies purge loyalists around him. Lars von Trier follows him through the carriages, where Katharina Hartmann (Barbara Sukowa) draws him closer to the people he meant to keep at a distance.
