Irene Girard (Ingrid Bergman), a wealthy Roman wife, wants a purpose to live for after her young son dies. She gives her time and her money to the city's poor and sick, over the objections of her husband George (Alexander Knox). Rossellini sets her among Rome's working-class neighborhoods, and the more she gives, the more the people close to her wonder whether she has lost her mind.
