The Angels keep coming for Tokyo-3, and NERV cannot say why humankind is their target. Two new pilots arrive, the intense Asuka Langley Shikinami (Yuko Miyamura) and the unexplained Mari Makinami Illustrious (Maaya Sakamoto), while Gendo Ikari and SEELE pursue a secret project involving Shinji (Megumi Ogata) and Rei. Masayuki and Kazuya Tsurumaki co-direct, and Shinji sits in the cockpit, a boy of fourteen strapped inside an Evangelion much bigger than he is.
